This is a learning module on information and knowledge and sustainable development.
In the 21st century, the interconnected trio of information, knowledge, and sustainable development has emerged as a catalyst for global progress. As societies navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world, leveraging information and knowledge in pursuit of sustainability has become paramount. However, beneath the surface lies a pressing issue: inequality in information and knowledge. Nigerian author and feminist Chimamanda Adichie calls the fact that we often only have access to certain knowledge or only see the world through the glasses we know from stories the “danger of a single story. The “danger of a single story”, as Adichie explains in her Ted Talk, draws attention to the fact that we often think or act from the perspective of a single story – be it about conflicts, people, world events or social phenomena. Which single story is told and heard has a lot to do with power.
